Fertility scanning of your pregnant bitch can be beneficial for a breeder for many reasons, amongst other reasons it will verify whether your bitch really is pregnant or whether it is a phantom pregnancy, it can confirm dates more accurately - helping you prepare easier, it can also help estimate how many puppies are due.
The scanning is non-invasive, perfectly safe and no anaesthetic is required nor is shaving your bitch necessary, unless there is a lot of hair, in which case some slight clipping may be required but won't be performed without owner's permission.
A gel is placed on the probe which is then placed on the bitch's stomach which then gives us a clear picture, much like a scan for a pregnant woman.
Your bitch will feel relaxed throughout the scan as she will be in a familiar environment and with the owner present, she will also most likely be stood so she will remain comfortable.
Scanning can be done 28 days after mating and anytime after that, please note that the later into the pregnancy the harder it is to determine how many foetus there are.
I recommend a scan be performed between day 28 and 35 (4 to 5 weeks) into pregnancy as this is the optimal time to see clearly. Puppies movements can usually be seen after days 34 or 36.
Please also realize that scanning is not 100% accurate and the number of pups seen is usually close to actual birthed pups but is only an estimate.
